Avanimiut provides a powerful counter-narrative to colonization.”

Read review

Avanimiut is a history of Inuit families who refused to join the Moravian Mission and lived their traditional way of life for as long as they could in northern Labrador. The book is a revised version of the 1996 report, ‘Northlanders,’ written by Carol Brice-Bennett for the Labrador Inuit Association. Lena Onalik, the Nunatsiavut Government’s Archaeologist and a descendent of an Avanimiut family, and I re-wrote and updated the report, incorporating Inuit writing and interviews and adding a new section on the Nutâk and Hebron evictions of the 1950s.

From the earliest interactions between Inuit and European colonizers in Labrador to the final eviction of Inuit from their northern homeland, this book illustrates the dignified history of Avanimiut families and honours the strength, resilience, and survival of their ancestors in the north.

All royalties from this book are donated to Doctors Without Borders through Carol Brice-Bennett’s estate.
